Event Description: The Ankeny Area Historical Society will be holding our first open house of 2018, along with a special speaker, on Sunday, April 8th, at our house museum and barn located at 301 SW Third St. Come see our displays about the Flood of ‘93 (which was 25 years ago this year!), Ankeny schools, Uptown stores, and the Great Western Fireworks factory. We also have displays covering the Ordnance Plant, early medicine, and many other areas of local history, as well as a library full of information about Ankeny, the surrounding areas, and the families who have lived here. A special addition to our first open house this year, we will also be hosting a presentation by Craig Bishop, author of the book Billy Sunday, The Baseball Evangelist, on the same day. His presentation will be from 1:00-2:00pm in our meeting room in the lower level of our museum house. He will share many photographs, and has deeply researched information about Billy Sunday’s life in Iowa. Our first open house event of 2018 will begin directly after his presentation, and run from 2:00-4:00pm. Mr. Bishop lives in Minnesota. He has a Bachelor’s degree in History, a Master’s degree in Soviet and East European Studies, and is a world traveler. He has worked with jail ministries for several year, and also spent time helping out in various churches. He is the Chairman of the Republican Party in his district. Billy Sunday was born in Ames, Iowa, in 1862 and was raised in various homes and orphanages in Iowa. He attended Nevada High School for part of his high school education, and a baseball field was named for him there. While living in Marshalltown, he was recruited by Cap Anson to play baseball for the Chicago White Stockings (the original name for the Chicago Cubs). There will be books available for purchase about Billy Sunday, the Ankeny area, and a new one about Floppy, our resident Beagle! Stop in and see the displays and artifacts that bring our past to life! Best of all, it’s free!
