In a pair of new blogs, attorneys Nicole P. and John Lande cover the recent Federal Trade Commission's final rule banning most uses of non-compete agreements. As you can imagine, the new rule opens the floodgates for workers to move to competitors of their employers. However, as Lande discusses, non-competes are still okay for banks — at least for now. It is with heavy hearts that we report our friend and fellow attorney, Fred Schneider, has passed away. Prior to the formation of Dickinson Bradshaw, Fred had been with the Dickinson firm from 2011 until his retirement in 2018, practicing in the areas of business and corporate law, with a focus in the publishing industry. Fred obtained a B.A. from Drake University in 1965 and his J.D. from Drake University Law School in 1967. Fred began his career as a law clerk for the Hon. Judge Roy Stephenson. He then joined Williams & Hart, and became a partner when the firm reorganized as Williams, Hart, Lavorato & Kirtley. In May, 1978, Fred became one of the founding partners of Smith, Schneider & Stiles. Ultimately the name was changed to Schneider, Stiles, Serangeli & Mountsier, and in 2011 the members of that firm, including Fred, joined the firm of Dickinson, Mackaman, Tyler & Hagen, where Fred worked until his retirement. During his respected 50+ year legal career, Fred served several long-term clients and acted as a mentor to younger attorneys building their practices. “Fred was an outstanding attorney and teacher. His kindness, patience and knowledge of the law was appreciated both by his clients and younger attorneys who he mentored over the years. He will be greatly missed.” — Amy Plummer “Fred was a brilliant attorney, and a great friend and mentor.” — Ron Mountsier #DickinsonBradshaw

We are deeply saddened to share the passing of our friend and colleague, Thomas D. Hanson. Tom had been an esteemed member of the Dickinson Bradshaw family since 2012. Throughout his 54-year legal career litigating civil and criminal cases in state and federal court, he was one of most active trial lawyers in the Central Iowa legal community and served as a mentor to several new attorneys over the years. As we remember his life and legacy, Tom will be remembered fondly for his keen insightfulness, his passion for justice, and his heart of gold. Tom was a friend, colleague, and mentor. He was always generous with his time to younger attorneys, always available to discuss cases, and passed around a lot of work. Most of Tom’s clients were clients for life, a testament to the trust they had in Tom, and something all of us at the Dickinson Bradshaw Firm aspire to achieve. Tom helped us become better attorneys, and made us a stronger Firm. Prior to joining Dickinson Bradshaw, Tom was a senior partner at Hanson, Bjork & Russell in Des Moines, and he worked at Mayer Brown in Chicago for many years. He received a B.A. from the University of Iowa in 1967, and his J.D. from the University of Chicago in 1970.
